NZTA has been in touch to ask us to spread the word about the change in designation for SH1 for cyclists.
"From Sunday 1 September 2024, the motorway between the Paekākāriki and Mackays Crossing interchanges will return to being a restricted motorway. This means cycling will not be permitted on any of the motorway.
The main (and safest) route for all cyclists is Te Ara o Whareroa, as it connects Paekākāriki to the Kāpiti cycle route at Poplar Ave. On-road cyclists can also use the new section of SH59, between the Paekākāriki and Mackays Crossing interchanges, to get to/from Raumati South and Paekākāriki."
