On Sunday 17th November, the place to be will be picturesque Martinborough for the Charity Fund Ride. Rescued from the event wilderness by new sponsors Ride Holidays (who is picking up the substantial tab for the traffic management) to preserve this hallmark event on a "use it or lose it" basis*. This generous offer deserves another - so to support the event and to help give some purpose to our winter and spring training, we've literally put this event on our collective (KCC) agenda.
To fill the pelotons with KCC blue jerseys and show our support for a great local event, we're offering:
- Send us a selfie of you on the start-line in your KCC jersey and we'll send you a $20 Tineli voucher
- We're putting up trophies for the fastest KCC members (male and female)
* If the event is a success this year, Ride Holidays will commit to sponsoring it in future years. "If we don’t support events like the Martinborough Charity Fun Ride then they simply won’t exist. Not next year, and certainly not in 10 years when our kids may want to ride bikes", says Karl from Ride Holidays.
The Martinborough Fun Ride has been a reason to go 'over-the-hill' for local cyclists since 1995 - its calendar spot only 2 weeks before Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge has made it a traditional warm-up event for Taupo. Enter Martinborough, and Ride Holidays is also offering the first 50 entries to go into a draw for a free entry to the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge and all Martinborough participants can get a 15% discount on Taupo (which Ride Holidays is also a sponsor of). See mcfr.org.nz for terms and conditions. Tickets go on sale this week (Thursday 1st August), so be in quick! Enter the Ride Holidays Martinborough Charity Fun Ride here and the official Event website is here
There are 115km, 67km and 48km options.
The Martinborough ride, Lake Taupo, and another on Wellington Anniversary weekend (Tour de Beautiful in sunny Waipukurau) will be three "away" events that KCC will to support this year - and the training aim of the new Sunday Hundy group. Revived with this clear purpose, Sunday Hundy is an endurance group ride leaving from Farmers Coastlands at 8am each Sunday. The weekly route is posted on a new Facebook Group "KCC Sunday Hundy". All welcome.
