Team Kapiti Grade 3

NITS2020 race1

The previous weekends race one was cancelled at the last minute due to the severe weather that hit the area causing flooding and trees to be blown down. Fortunately, we decided the night prior not to risk the 300km round trip to Alfredton.
Race Two was switched to the race one course, comprising two laps of a challenging 34km loop over some very testing climbs totalling 68km. The day dawned dry but pretty windy with very strong gusts buffeting the peloton throughout the race.
After a number of years as a Masters Grade series, this year the races included all age groups which proved significant as to how the race unfolded. A vastly different flavour to previous years. Younger riders appearing to outnumber the seasoned master’s riders.
Despite the windy conditions the race soon sprung into an aggressive affair with a number of early attacks to split the race, a trio soon established a 50 second gap which looked fairly positive with a fourth rider battling the wind to catch the trio and then riding away from them to stay away. Team Kapiti Ironman, Leon Goodwin put in a massive pull in trying to reduce the deficit, which resulted in the trio being caught but the lone rider stayed away.
Miles Davies was always prominent at the front, in fact Miles lead the peloton down one of the gravel strewn descents at over 75kph, very nearly catching Howard and me in the service car.
Miles was in the mix at the final sprint finishing approx. 10th, a great effort especially having ridden to the start from Palmerston North.
Overall, the Kapiti crew proved their worth in the testing conditions against their younger adversaries. Richard and Leon finished just behind the small peloton with Tony a few moments later.
Full results will be published once confirmed by the race organiser.
